A Blockchain VC
For some time, I’ve wanted to write about my experiences and thoughts about investing in the decentralized web. I first heard of Bitcoin in 2011 while scaling my startup SYNAQ and was intrigued with the concept that Bitcoin could be a new type of “open source money.” But it wasn’t until 2013 that I took my first leap and started investing in Bitcoin. Even then, I wasn’t entirely convinced that Bitcoin was anything more than an interesting open source project.
That was until I exited my startup, joined Techstars and started investing in fintech companies, two of which were using the Bitcoin Blockchain (Ethereum had yet to launch) to try to radically change the industries they were in. Through investing in those startups, I saw the potential that Bitcoin, blockchain and decentralization could have on the world, and I wanted to get involved.
So I went down the proverbial rabbit hole and now I dedicate my life to investing in and working with incredible people from around the world who are building the decentralized web and the future of money.
I’ve taken inspiration from a daily blog post that I’ve been following religiously for as long as I can remember. If you haven’t subscribed to Fred Wilson’s avc.com then I suggest you do so. I’ve learned a great deal from reading Fred’s daily thoughts on venture investing. I hope that over the years to come I can write as clearly as he does, and that these posts will be able to share the kind of wisdom and insight that Fred delivers in his.
A BVC is the place where I’ll be sharing my reflections on my trials, lessons, failures and successes as an early-stage investor in this space. Those investments are made through my role as the Managing Director of the Techstars Blockchain accelerator in New York City and through a venture fund that I co-founded, Onchain Capital.
